How an evening works

Most escape room books hand you a pile of separate riddles. This one is an escape room you solve in a book: one case from December 1 to Christmas Eve, and every evening ends with one letter.

“One evening, one letter, no reading ahead.”

The house rule, page 4
  1. 01

    Solve

Open the date that is due, read the story and the note from the old master's shop book, then solve the puzzle. The answer is always a bench word, a word from the workshop.

  2. 02

    Look up

Find that bench word in the Bench Table on the day's document page. Next to it stands a two-digit field number.

  3. 03

    Convert

The first digit is the row, the second is the column in that evening's Code Table. The cell you land on holds your letter.

  4. 04

    Write in

Pencil the letter into today's field in the Strike Row, close the book, and leave tomorrow for tomorrow.

The Strike Row: 24 fields, one per evening. It stays empty here. Yours fills in by hand.

An advent calendar puzzle in a book, not a box

There are no doors to tear open and no chocolate. Each date is a spread in the book, with the story and puzzle on the left and the document of the day on the right, and the longer evenings run to four pages. The advent puzzles change every night: ciphers, letter grids, elimination grids, a floor plan to walk and two stencils to cut out. The first evenings are marked easy, and the later ones climb to hard.

What makes it a good escape room puzzle book

  • 01

    One case, start to finish

All 24 nights belong to the same story on Bell Lane, and every letter stays in the row until Christmas Eve. No evening is filler.

  • 02

    Hints on the same page

Each puzzle has its hints printed upside down at the foot of the page. Turn the book only when you want one.

  • 03

    Catch-up pages

After days 7, 14 and 21 a catch-up page shows how far your row should be and where to find help for a missed day.

  • 04

    Walkthroughs at the back

If a night beats you, the back of the book walks through every puzzle step by step, so you can enter the letter and keep going.

  • 05

    Pencil and paper only

No app, no screen, no internet. A pencil, pointed scissors and a table.

Questions about The Mysterious Countdown

Is this the escape room advent calendar book from TikTok?

Yes. The Mysterious Countdown by Cork & Pin Press is the escape room advent calendar book shown in the TikTok videos: the clockmaker's workshop, the wall with no door and the code of the night. It is a 116-page paperback puzzle book with 24 puzzle nights from December 1 to Christmas Eve.

Is The Mysterious Countdown a real book?

Yes. The Mysterious Countdown is a real, printed paperback of 116 pages, 6 x 9 inches, published by Cork & Pin Press on September 5, 2026 (ISBN 979-8172026911). The pages shown on this site are pages from the printed book.

Where can I buy The Mysterious Countdown?

The Mysterious Countdown by Cork & Pin Press is sold as a paperback on Amazon.com, and the buttons on this page go straight to it. The German edition, Der Escape Room Krimi-Adventskalender, is sold on amazon.de.

Is it a box or a book?

It is a book. The Mysterious Countdown is a paperback puzzle book, not a box, so there are no doors to open and no chocolate inside. Each of the 24 dates is a spread in the book with a story, a puzzle and a document of the day. If you were looking for an advent puzzle calendar with a jigsaw behind every door, this is different: the 24 puzzles are printed pages you solve with a pencil.

How does an escape room book work?

An escape room book turns the puzzles of an escape room into pages you solve with a pencil. In The Mysterious Countdown each evening has one puzzle, its answer is a word you turn into a single letter with the tables on the page, and that letter goes into a row of 24 fields. One evening, one letter, until Christmas Eve.

Is it for adults? Can teens play?

Yes. It is a mystery advent calendar for adults, and teens from 14 can play too, alone or alongside you. The first evenings are marked easy and the later ones climb to hard, and you do not need any puzzle experience to start.

What if we get stuck? Are the answers online?

Hints are printed upside down on the same page, so you only read one when you turn the book. Catch-up pages follow days 7, 14 and 21, and step-by-step walkthroughs for every puzzle are printed at the back of the book. We never post answers online, so the ending stays yours.

Can we play it as a couple, or alone?

Both. The book is made for one player or a pair. On a few evenings the task is split into four quarters, so two players can take two quarters each, and a solo player works through them in order. It also works well as a December date night for two.

When do we start, and is it a 2026 edition?

You start on December 1 and play one evening per date until Christmas Eve, so these are Christmas advent puzzles for the 24 nights before Christmas. The evenings follow the calendar dates, not one particular year, so the book works for Christmas 2026 and any December after. If you start late, play two evenings a night until you catch up.

What do I need to play?

A pencil, a pair of pointed scissors or a craft knife for the cut-out stencils, and a table. There is no app, no screen and no internet involved. The book is in English, and a German edition is sold separately on amazon.de.

Who is Cork & Pin Press?

Cork & Pin Press is a puzzle and mystery imprint published by Kalderno. It makes books you play at a table, with no screen and no app, including The Mysterious Countdown, The Family Escape Room Advent Calendar and the ALIBI-X case files.
